90 Years of Community Sailing in Vancouver

Since 1934, Kitsilano Yacht Club has welcomed Vancouver to the water. Generations have learned, raced, and made friends here. Today, our nonprofit, volunteer-powered club keeps that spirit alive. Members enjoy a friendly, welcoming social scene; a community hub for paddling — outrigger, kayak, and SUP; active one-design racing in the Star, 5O5, Martin 242, Lightning, and Cal 20 fleets; and accessible ways to get on the water without owning a boat through our co-op program. We are proud to offer inclusive learn-to-sail programs for youth and adults (no membership required!)

Learn to Sail in Vancouver, BC

The Kitsilano Yacht Club has introduced Vancouver sailors to sailing for over 80 years. Our summer camps and sailing courses for adults continue that tradition of inspiring the next generation of sailors.

With full-day summer camps for youth and convenient evening courses for adults, Kitsilano Yacht Club (KYC) makes it easy for all ages to start sailing in Vancouver on beautiful English Bay. Our Sail Canada–certified instructors follow the nationally-recognized CANSail curriculum, ensuring a fun, safe, and supportive learning experience for every student.

We are proud to be a Sail Canada and BC Sailing member club. KYC is a registered CANSail training site, so as you advance through CANSail levels 1–6, you’ll earn nationally recognized credentials – a true passport to future sailing adventures.

Sailing Summer Camps

Our week-long, full-day camps turn summer into an adventure for kids and teens. New sailors learn sailing skills through games, hands-on practice, and exploration on the water, all in an engaging, supportive environment. By the end of the week, campers build confidence, make friends, and discover a lifelong love for sailing.

Learn to Sail Courses for Adults

Learn to sail after work! Our evening learn to sail courses for adults cater to all experience levels, whether you’re a complete beginner or dusting off old skills. Small-group evening classes let you enjoy the evening breeze on English Bay while mastering sailing fundamentals at your own pace. Taught by friendly, experienced coaches, these courses cover everything from basic boat handling to advanced techniques as you progress (CANSail Levels 1–4).

New to sailing or returning after a break? No boat and no experience are required to begin – just bring your enthusiasm! At KYC, getting started is easier than you think. Our welcoming community and learn-to-sail pathway will have you confidently trimming sails in no time. Many graduates even join our Co-op Program as a next step, gaining access to a fleet of club boats without the costs of ownership – perfect for practicing your new skills and enjoying the water anytime.

One-Design on English Bay — welcoming, competitive, and fun

With competitive racing and a welcoming culture, KYC is Vancouver’s community hub for one-design racing on English Bay. Our Star, 5O5, Martin 242, Lightning, and Cal 20 fleets deliver spirited competition on the water and a friendly community that always welcomes new racers, with plenty of ways to get involved. Our members regularly compete in local regattas, both in English Bay and across BC.

Thursday Night Racing: Short, engaging races with plenty of chances to learn and improve. Vibrant social nights and dinners follow after racing, all season long.

Regattas: Join us for the Spring Has Sprung Regatta, the Kits Invitational, VARC Closer, Bluenose Regatta and more.

KYC Co-op Program

Watercraft for Every Adventurer

Love the water but don’t own a boat? Our Co-op Program unlocks a fleet of club-owned sailboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards – perfect for exploring English Bay without the costs and hassle of owning your own gear. It’s an ideal way for new or returning sailors to practice their skills and for any member to enjoy the water on their own schedule. Co-op members are part of the same friendly community and help care for the equipment to keep the fun going.

Co-op Highlights:

Affordable Access to Boats: Use KYC’s sailboats (Cal 20 keelboat, Laser & C420 dinghies) as well as kayaks and SUPs for a fraction of the cost of owning a boat

Skill Building: Improve your sailing and paddling skills in a low-pressure environment. It’s a great way for beginners or those a bit out of practice to gain confidence through regular use of club boats

Flexibility: Drop in for a paddle or go for a sail on your own schedule. Daytime or evening, the co-op lets you enjoy English Bay when it suits you.

Note: An active KYC membership is required to join the Co-op Program. Co-op members contribute a small additional volunteer commitment (5 hours/year) to help maintain the fleet, keeping this program running affordably for all.

Co-op Program Eligibility – No boat? No problem! Members can join the KYC Co-op to access club sailboats, kayaks, and paddleboards without the cost or hassle of ownership.

KYC IS THE HOME OF PACIFIC REACH PADDLING

Pacific Reach was founded in 2001 with the vision to establish Competitive Race Crews within a vibrant Social Club. Our Paddling Club is comprised of distance and sprint paddlers, and Race Teams. We focus on fitness and training in various paddling disciplines: Outrigger OC6, SUP, Marathon Canoe, Surfski.

We foster and promote the Sport of Paddling in the Vancouver Community and wherever we travel to race. Our Club activities are in line with the mandates set by the Canadian Outrigger Racing Association, Dragon Boat Canada, and Kitsilano Yacht Club.
